Working in the Community

School Visits

Our oral health promotion activities have been extended into the community and involve visits to Primary and Pre-schools in the Newton Abbot District of Teignbridge, teaching children about healthy teeth and healthy eating as well as promoting national campaigns such as Smile Month, Smoking Cessation and Oral Cancer awareness. Our aim is to raise awareness by the understanding of the process of dental disease and the major part the individual plays in preventing it. Our objective is taking a consistent dental health message into the community.

Feedback from children after one of Michele’s school visits:

‘I really enjoyed your talk and found it very interesting. It’s hard not having sweets but I can cope’

‘I liked the pictures that you put up on the screen. Some of them were disgusting. I loved the quiz you gave us and found it quite hard’

‘Thank you so much for visiting our class last week. I really enjoyed your visit. Now I’m brushing my teeth twice. I’ve now learnt that my teeth are very delicate. They might decay’.

‘The disclosing tablet was disgusting. I brush my teeth twice a day now and I use a special toothpaste.’

‘I have stopped drinking fizzy drinks. I drink healthy ones with low sugar in’

‘I clean them for two minutes and am eating sweets once a week. I have not had tooth decay or a filling’
